New Car Technology That’s Driving the Future of Design

The history of the car is also the history of new car technology. Car design and future tech have always gone hand-in-hand, from the advent of power steering to implementing airbags to Bluetooth integration.

Every auto industry update brings new technology designed to impress consumers, make driving a more pleasant experience, and keep everyone inside and outside of the car safer.

So what does the near future of car technology look like? There’s a lot of cool tech being implemented in new car design, such as…

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) is a technique used to add layers of virtual objects to the existing real-world environment. It differs from virtual reality (VR) since there is no need to enter a fully virtual world.

New cars can take advantage of AR by giving a driver supplementary information in real time. A built-in computer on the dashboard could display directions and hazard warnings.

For now, AR tech will be focused on the driver’s experience, but expect that to change once the technology is more advanced. Soon, it’s likely that passengers will also have an AR experience.

Heads-Up Displays

Future car tech is also likely to use a HUD or heads-up display to convey important information to the driver. HUD technology projects information on the windshield above the dashboard. It’s a technique that lets the driver see important information without looking down.

HUD technology in cars isn’t new, but it is being used more frequently. It’s also capable of being highly customizable, allowing the vehicle owner to alter the brightness of the HUD, as well as the selection of information displayed.

Regenerative Braking

A traditional hydraulic braking system wastes energy. In a regenerative braking system, kinetic energy is captured from the braking system and transferred to the battery. In an electric or hybrid vehicle, this helps replenish a small amount of range.

Voice Activation

More vehicle features are being controlled via a touchscreen, which sounds great until a driver struggles to find the control they need. Suddenly, adjusting a vehicle’s climate or audio became more time-consuming and just out of reach.

Touchscreens can be even harder to use if they lack haptic feedback, which is often used to indicate a particular action has occurred.

This leads to another problem: drivers take their eyes off the road to check that they are making the right selection on their touchscreen.

Fortunately, voice activation can solve that problem. Instead of looking at a screen or fumbling over controls, a vehicle operator can activate a voice control system by saying something like, “Hey Dodge” or “Hey Jeep,” and then giving it a command (such as adjusting the temperature).
